Cold One

IMG_0323 Right around Monday of this week, I got my first cold in, say, a year? My feelings about this are that I prefer chunky soup to creamy soup because I like to have something to chew on and that I could handle all the mucus if it came without sneezing seizures and the red, watery eyes associated with them. This is obvious stuff. Also, the chili oil at Pho Gia on Sandy is incendiary—a healing elixir sent down from stuffed-nose heaven. It simultaneously throws open the doors to your airways and makes you sweat out the bad stuff.

Anyhoo, all better now. Chomp on some garlic so you don't git what I got!

Fall To-Do List

IMG_0952 Oh hi. You prob noticed, but a couple September storms rolled through this weekend, and now it's decidedly not summer anymore. So, here's what I'ma gonna do about it.

1. Make more backyard fires. Toast my feet. Turn my back toward the cold of night.

2. Skate all the razor scooter parks while the children are locked up in school.

3. Master making my own bread. For the warmth from the oven. For the feel of kneading dough. For the art and the chemistry. For the way it makes the house smell.

4. Lay around in bed ’til late.

5. Throw a party—celebrate another year of me. Hope someone brings cupcakes (someone usually does).

6. Take longer dog walks. Watch the changing light.

Septembering

me Hey! It's my birthday month! I'm always really happy in September because of its coolness, its calmness, its slanty sunshine and crisp nights, plus the likelihood of cupcakes coming my way toward the end of the month.

Already this September I've gotten on and off planes, eaten the best deep-dish pizza of my young life, drank beer mixed with kambucha for the first time (tart! boozy!), and watched the fog roll in over San Francisco Bay. I think it bodes well for the year to come—but the future's unwritten, right?

Anyway, peeps who know me know that this past year's been wild—the wildest, actually. Some shit sucked. Some shit ruled. A lot of shit changed ... I'm alive, though, ain't I?! See, there's always hope, for me and for you.

The Weekend Report

photo Undertook traumatizing home improvement project, wore kerchief over my hair to ward off paint, looked like an old photo of my mom doing same back in the 70s.

Attended gathering at the Bracewell residence, got clouds of campfire smoke in face, skated backyard mini ramp until exhaustion, stayed out past 1 a.m. (!!!!).

Drank tall, strong coffee, finished traumatizing home improvement project with sweat running down face.

Stood in front of fan and took off all clothes, donned bathing suit, went to river with my pal and read and toasted and stared at the place where the trees meet the sky. Beach fire in the vicinity, more campfire smoke to face.

Adrift

A death in the family today. Not a bunch to say about that. But, in general, just simmering on mortality. You work very hard. And yet, plans fail everyday. Life—there's no describing it. And death is, maybe, the greatest mystery of all.
